Refrigerator Not Cooling? What It Usually Is, and What It Rarely Is

You open the fridge, and it is not cold. The light is on, you can hear something running, but the milk is warm and the freezer is soft. It is one of the few appliance faults that costs you money by the hour, because the food is spoiling while you decide what to do.

Here is the useful thing to know before anyone comes out: a fridge that stops cooling is usually not a dead compressor. That matters, because the compressor is the single most expensive part of the appliance, and almost everything else on the list is not.

What the compressor actually does

Think of it as a pump. It pushes refrigerant around a loop, and that loop carries heat out of the cabinet and dumps it into your kitchen. That is the whole job. Your fridge does not make cold — it moves heat out, continuously, and the compressor is what moves it.

When it genuinely fails, nothing cools. Not the fridge, not the freezer. That detail is worth remembering, because it is the fastest way to rule it out.

The single most common cause we actually find

Dust-packed condenser coils.

Coils in this state cannot shed heat. The compressor runs and runs, the food never gets properly cold, and the electricity bill climbs quietly in the background.

The coils are how the heat leaves. Pack them with dust and pet hair and they stop releasing it, so the compressor runs constantly trying to reach a temperature it cannot reach. People hear it running non-stop and reasonably conclude the compressor is failing. Often the compressor is fine, and it is being asked to do an impossible job.

Left long enough, that does kill compressors. Which is how a cleaning job turns into a replacement.

Things that look like compressor failure but are not

  • Start relay. Small, inexpensive part. When it fails the compressor cannot start, and you get a repeated click every few minutes. Sounds catastrophic. Usually is not.
  • Evaporator fan. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is not, this is a prime suspect — the cold is being made and not moved.
  • Defrost system. Frost builds over the coils inside until air cannot pass. Gradual, and easy to mistake for a slow death.
  • Door seals. Warm air leaking in constantly. Cheap to fix, easy to overlook.

This is why we test before quoting. Replacing a compressor that was never the problem is an expensive way to end up with the same warm fridge.

A quick check you can do right now

Open the freezer. Is it still freezing?

  • Freezer cold, fridge warm — almost certainly not the compressor. Airflow, fan or defrost.
  • Both warm, nothing running — could be the compressor, could be the relay, could be power.
  • Both warm, and it is running constantly — check the coils before anything else.

That one observation narrows it down more than anything else you can do without tools, and it is genuinely useful to tell us on the phone.

Is it worth repairing?

The rule most of the trade works to: if the repair approaches half the cost of a comparable new unit, think hard. It is a guide rather than a law. A well-built fridge with one failed part is often worth fixing well past that line; a cheap one already repaired twice usually is not.

Age changes the math in a way people forget. A fridge from the early 2000s can cost meaningfully more to run than a current one, so a big repair on an old unit sometimes loses even when the number looks acceptable. The ENERGY STAR certified product list is the place to check that honestly.

While you are waiting

Keep the doors shut. A closed fridge holds temperature for hours; an opened one loses it in minutes. Move anything genuinely perishable to a cooler with ice. The FDA has a clear explanation of why 40 °F is the number that matters and how long food is safe above it — worth two minutes if you are deciding what to throw out.

Preventing the next one

Clean the condenser coils about twice a year. That is the whole maintenance routine, and it prevents more refrigerator failures than everything else combined. Whirlpool publishes a short walkthrough of how to do it, and the method is much the same on most makes.

Leave a few inches of clearance behind and above the unit so the heat has somewhere to go, and check the door seals occasionally by closing them on a sheet of paper. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal is not sealing.
