Dinner is half started, you turn the burner on, and nothing happens. The other three work. This one is dead, or it glows for a moment and gives up, or it heats on one side only.
One dead burner almost never means the cooktop is finished. It usually means one replaceable component has failed — and there are two very different candidates.
The element or the switch
Under each burner there is a heating element: a coil that turns electricity into heat. Controlling it is a switch that decides how much power reaches it and for how long. On most electric cooktops that is an infinite switch, which cycles the element on and off to hold a setting.
Either can fail, and the symptoms overlap enough that guessing is a poor strategy:
- Dead at every setting — could be either.
- Works on high, nothing on low — points at the switch.
- Heats unevenly, or only part of the ring glows — points at the element.
- Comes on, then quits after a few minutes — often the switch, sometimes a failing connection.
- Visible blistering, cracking or burn marks — the element, and stop using that burner.

There is a third possibility people miss
The connection itself.
Burner elements plug into a receptacle, and those terminals live in a hot environment for years. They corrode, they loosen, and they arc. A burned receptacle produces exactly the same dead burner as a failed element, and fitting a new element into a damaged socket will destroy the new element too.
It is also the version of this fault worth taking seriously, because arcing connections are how cooking appliances start fires. The NFPA notes that cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires in the US.
Signs you should stop using it now
- Sparking, arcing or visible flashes at the burner
- A burning or hot-plastic smell when that burner is on
- The breaker trips when you use it
- Scorch marks around the element socket
- More than one burner behaving strangely at once
Several burners misbehaving together usually points past the burners themselves — to the supply, the terminal block or the control board. That is a different and more serious diagnosis. The Electrical Safety Foundation International has plain guidance on where household electrical work stops being a homeowner job.
Coil or glass?
On an older coil cooktop, elements unplug and lift out, and the repair is usually simple. On a smooth glass-top, the radiant elements sit underneath the glass, which means the surface has to come out to reach them. More involved, and the glass is the expensive part — which is the main reason we would rather do that one than have it done twice.
If the glass itself is cracked, that changes the conversation. Cracked glass on a live cooktop is a shock and moisture hazard, and it is usually the point at which replacement wins.
Making the elements last
Wipe spills once the surface is cool rather than letting them carbonise on. Use pans roughly the size of the burner — a small pan on a large element sends most of the heat sideways into the cooktop. Do not heat empty pans on high. And on glass tops, most of the damage we get called to is something heavy set down harder than intended.
